BioNAME: Nii Jienyi (previously known as Ukoku Sanzo, and Ken'yuu before that)
FANDOM: Saiyuki
AGE: Not overtly stated in the manga (Minekura teased us with a vague and fragmented timeline), but based on computations and estimates I'd say around... 36.
GENDER: Male
SEXUALITY: Bisexual. In canon, his coworkers know that he's sleeping with their female boss, but he has this thing for her stepson.... yeah.
APPEARANCE: As Nii, his short black hair is spiked up towards the back of his head, with a few strands of hair still falling on his forehead. His large square-ish eyeglasses can either show or hide his black eyes depending on the mood and the lighting, and his general facial expression is a combination of a leer, a smirk, and a cynical smile. The stubble on his chin adds to his ragged appearance, and he makes wearing a lab coat (his usual attire, over a polo shirt with a tie and slacks) look very comfortable. His loose posture adds to the lazy/laid-back feel. More often than not, there's a freshly lit cigarette stick on his person. He always carry a white stuffed rabbit with him.
As Ukoku, his hair is down, his face is smoother (the stubble's gone), and he looks younger. There's still a smile on his face, but the cynical edge is stronger. In this persona, he wears a black version of the Sanzou robes.
In one of the recent volumes, Nii is shown to have switched back to Ukoku. How he fixed is hair still boggles the mind.
PERSONALITY: The first impression that Nii gives people is that he is laid back, lazy, intelligent, extremely bored, and insane (or, at the very least, eccentric). He is fond of toys and games (there are several scenes with him and a chess board), and his work etiquette drives Huang, a coworker of his, to frustration and insanity. Nii's dialogue tends to be ambiguous at times, giving the readers (and the other characters) trouble in deciding whether or not to take his words as they are. At times, he talks to other people (and himself) with his stuffed rabbit.
As the story goes on, more interesting traits of his surface. He's sly, cunning, manipulative, cynical, nihilistic, and self-destructive. Everything is a game to him: his "insanity" and manner of communicating/interacting with others are just two of the ways that he toys with people, and several major events in the manga were, in one form or another, orchestrated by him. He often gets upset if things don't go his way or according to the flow of the game - for example, he manipulated a former associate of his ("associate" isn't the right term for their relationship, though I can't remember how they met in the first place) into joining his set-up after one of his pawns (his boss' stepson) broke free of the mind-control Nii had on him.
Nii's nihilism is one of the central themes of his character. He finds no value or meaning in his accomplishments, even though they are worthy of praise - among them are graduating with a doctoral degree at the age of 17 (I think) and becoming a Sanzo (the highest rank of the Buddhist religious order in this 'verse) at the age of 19.[1] Because he doesn't find value in anything, he wanders through life aimlessly. It's also possible that he orchestrated the grand event in hopes that he would die there, and that his death would have the meaning that his life lacked.
The irony in his controlling tendencies is that he can't see beyond the scenarios that he's aware of and/or that he's constructed. His sense of security comes from the fact that he himself is not directly involved in the scenario - the labs where he works at obscure him from the protagonists, and in the first set of manga we only know of his exsistence through short glimpses. It's possible that he, himself, could be manipulated if that distance was eliminated.
[1]Interestingly, he accomplished the latter not because he was truly religious (he has a conflicted stance at the existence of a god, and his personal qualities aren't ones that you see in an enlightened person) but because he was bored and he heard that (paraphrased) "the hardest thing to accomplish in this world is to become a Sanzou."
